The Whirlpool Galaxy<\/b>, also known as Messier<\/a> 51a<\/b>, M51a<\/b>, or NGC 5194<\/b>, is an interacting<\/a>[7]<\/a><\/sup> grand-design<\/a>[8]<\/a><\/sup> spiral galaxy<\/a> with a Seyfert 2<\/a> active galactic nucleus<\/a>[9]<\/a><\/sup> in the constellation<\/a> Canes Venatici<\/a>. It was the first galaxy to be classified as a spiral galaxy.[10]<\/a><\/sup> Recently it was estimated to be 23 \u00b1 4 million light-years<\/a> from the Milky Way<\/a>,[3]<\/a><\/sup> but different methods yield distances between 15 and 35 million light-years. Messier 51 is one of the best known galaxies in the sky.[11]<\/a><\/sup> The galaxy and its companion, NGC 5195<\/a>, are easily observed by amateur astronomers<\/a>, and the two galaxies may even be seen with binoculars<\/a>.[12]<\/a><\/sup> The Whirlpool Galaxy is also a popular target for professional astronomers, who study it to further understand galaxy structure (particularly structure associated with the spiral arms<\/a>) and galaxy interactions.<\/p>\n
